Charlie, Malayalam Movie

Watching a movie, till 2009, was just for the story, songs, comedy and the actors. It was never for anything else. I took triple main with specialization in Journalism, Psychology and English Literature and world around rolled for the better. It began with 'No Mans Land' in the Journalism Studio and the discussion which followed the same. Fr Richard Rego helped us in developing an eye for details in movie-making. He passed his passion on to many of us and we still carry it around. Prof Lourdswamy, English Professor taught us to visualise symbolism, romanticism and poetry even in the most boring context. Ms Shalini Aiyappa made us thing of the humane emotions and circumstances in the way we may not have thought of before. Hence, watching a movie is a wholesome experience, at least for me. A movie which does not click for my friends and family or the box office, clicks for me. Same thing happened with Charlie.

Watched Malayalam Movie Charlie directed by Martin Prakkat. Story by Unni R & Martin Prakkat with cinematography by Joemon T John. The story is unique in its own way. The Art work and cinematography by Joemon makes one smile through the scenes. The characters portrayed by Charlie (Dulquar Salman) and Tessa (Parvathy) are elements which adds to the story. There is no extra screen presence, as every character who comes and goes is indispensable for the story to continue. There is a Charlie and Tessa in me, which made me live that life for few hours. After long watched a movie which made me smile after the movie. Theatre viewing adds to the experience :)

Its interesting to see the experimentation in the storyline, cinematography and characterization of late in Malayalam Cinema. More and more non-malyalaees are viewing Malayalam Cinema in theaters which was not so before. Malaylam movies were known for real-life emotional drama and watched by film-festival goers. The mass-media, sub-titles, songs, actors have widened horizons to include global audience. Am glad this happened! Better late than never.

Management Intro Talks

A week before was in Chennai. It is so hot there. I and my wishes! When Bawa told Chennai is hot, I wanted to experience it. Never knew it would get fulfilled so fast you see. Had actually been there for an interview which I beautifully termed it as “Management Introductory Talk (MIT)”. Why?!?! The very nice part about my life is, I am qualified for the job for which I studied, but there is no experience you see. Speak of Catch-22 situation. All companies want experienced people hence not ready to take in fresher. It is nice, as I don’t want to so quickly become old and worn out. Actually I will never be!

Now why a MIT?!!

Interviewer: Excellent Curriculum Vitae (CV), awesome personality skills, so much of dynamism etc etc... But oh know, experience wise a bit low. Anyways tell us about yourself.

Yours truly: Blah... Blah... I am also a faculty of YES!+. (and wait for them to question me)

Interviewer: What is YES!+?

Yours truly: YES!+ is nothing but one of the most finest and challenging courses for the youths world over... It is known as Youth Empowerment and Skills Workshop.. (Rest some of you know my intro talks, I enlighten them on the same).

Interviewer: Hmmm continue...

Yours truly: YES!+, Sri Sri, My experiences, how youths have benefited, how we should be responsible and give back to society etc are the main topics.

Interviewer: Woah! I will take your resume back to our place. Don’t you think you are more fit as YES!+ faculty? We would love to have you in the company, but your experience level makes us think twice. All the best for a bright future.

They quit & I began

Shrikanth and I had been to the Big Fm office, Mangalore. Shrikanth's good friend Sudeep (You got to meet this person, young dynamite) took us to this office at Bharat Mall, for Anantrang purpose. RJ Avinash, a popular RJ was so kind enough to explain to us the working of FM. It was an eye-opener and an amazing evening. We got to know about variety of occupations that are thriving in this nation, other than being a doctor or an engineer or a teacher. Avinash even RJed in front of us and dedicated a romantic number for Shrikanth, which made Shrikanth blush for some time :) .

Sudeep is this young lad who is doing his Journalism, History and English Literature in Alva’s Moodabidri. So what!! This is not it. He is also an editor of online website called nammamangaluru. Working as a journalist and a part-time RJ. A noble citizen who loves his country and quite sensitive to societal issues. Always on deadlines, fear seems to be the word he never heard. When not completing his assignments, taking part in fests, or writing articles, he watches movies. A sweet boy, respecting all and wants to be in Mangalore to make a difference.This lad has guts. Guts to choose what he wants to do rather that what was expected of him. I being this sort of person, it triggered something in me. It is nice to be successful in what we love rather than live what we do not so much love.

There are so many people taking charge of my life other than my parents (Parents have bit of the right you see:) Acting so worried and dejected at what I am doing. How can I start enjoying life? kind of thing. Being a gold-medallist they expected me to enter the mechanical world out there, slogging for peanuts. But no ways. I am here to make a difference in others life. I can confidently say I have begun in that road. Seeing them blossom in front of me.

Recently quit this crappy job of mine, as was getting trained in being artificial. Is it my cup of tea???!!!! NO!

Media Matters??!!

Every network is coming up with a 24-hour news channel. Now every network has a 24 hr approach to news. Minute by minute or rather second by second development is right in front of our eyes. But one thing is crystal clear in front of our eyes i.e. all the 24 hr news channel is in a silent competition with one another. They are concerned about increasing their ratings, not reporting alone. All the channels are waiting for a news item, in order to chew on it for a while and throw it into the drains.

It was during the early weeks of April, the channels were waiting for breaking news on which they could sit for a while. It was like a hungry animal waiting for its prey. On 22 April 2006 comes a prey along the way. Pramod Mahajan, the Bharathiya Janata Party (BJP) general secretary Pramod Mahajan is shot by his own younger brother, Pravin Mahajan at the former’s home in Purna Apartments at Worli, Mumbai. When Pravin was surrendering himself in a Mumbai Police Station the news channels were already flashing the news of Pramod Mahajan’s condition.

On 2 June 2006 the same family enters the channels. This time the limelight is on Late Pramod Mahajan’s son, Rahul Mahajan.Rahul and Vivek Moitra, a key aide of Pramod Mahajan admitted in the hospital. However Moitra is declared dead while Rahul is fighting for his life. It was not a case of food poisoning as reported until 10 am, instead a pure case of Drug Abuse. Each channel goes on with its investigative and interpretative reporting. Friends of Rahul and Vivek, who were absconding, confessed to the media before surrendering. This. Then one channel comes out with the medical reports of Rahul ‘s medical tests showing how the hospital authorities tampered it.

One way of looking at the reports above is the advancement in technology. How fast the news reaches us. The concern on the part of the media to report the happenings to its viewers is also there.

Another side of the same coin is its negative impact on the viewers in general. Live reporting, interviews etc presents the picture on the whole. Many a times the channel takes up the job of thinking for the viewer. The viewer’s stand on an issue is largely influenced by the stand the news channel takes. Day after day for nearly a week the same reporting goes on in the channel. The other news items take a back seat. This is a torture to many of the viewers. But ironically, when asked about the repeated or continuous reporting of the same item again and again, the answer given by them is that the viewers ask for it and the truth is that we audience cannot be choosers. We are compelled to watch what they show. So the question of viewers demand does not arise at all.

Other thing is the type of reporting. Especially the Drug usage of Rahul Mahajan is blown up. I completely agree that it has to be reported, but not repeatedly and continuous. The teenagers and many section of the audience now got to know the variety of drugs available in the market, ways to procure it, how to consume it etc. The very fact that Rahul Mahajan and many people in the Cine World consume drugs give wrong signals to this group. Now the question arises,' is this not there in the 30 min news, broadcast daily?’ Yes in this 30 min news everything is given somewhat equal importance. Nothing is given too much or too less importance. The fact is stated as it is. A different news programme takes the interpretative reporting. Psychologically speaking when a issue is repeatedly or continuously broadcast it draws the attention of the people, especially of the teenagers, to issues like that of drugs, alcohol etc.

This is just two of the news item, which I mentioned. The channels should realise that they have a variety audience. They need to keep this in mind. Catering to the needs of all the type of audience should be given priority. All the detailed research or reports on any particular news can be telecast in another news-based programme, instead of the regular news.
